New Orleans jazz funeral services · Texas

Walk them home with music.

Dignified jazz funeral music for families and funeral homes — a somber hymn coming in, a joyful send-off going out.

The Tradition

Grief coming in. Celebration going out.

For more than a century, New Orleans has carried its loved ones home with music. The jazz funeral begins in sorrow — slow hymns played as family and friends gather to mourn. Then, as the departed is carried out, the music lifts. The tempo rises, the melody brightens, and the gathering becomes a celebration of a life well lived and a soul set free.

Closer Walk brings that tradition to Texas with the care and restraint a funeral deserves.

Services

Two ways to honor them.

Indoor Jazz Funeral

Our standard service

A small ensemble of professional musicians performs inside the chapel. We enter in a quiet, precise single-file procession, play a solemn hymn as mourners gather, and lead a joyful send-off as the casket departs. No permits, no disruption — suited to nearly any funeral home.

Outdoor Second Line

The full tradition

For families who want the complete New Orleans experience: a procession outdoors with handkerchiefs and umbrellas, moving from the service to the hearse or along a cemetery drive. Available at venues that allow it. We coordinate any permits or escort the route requires.

Ensembles

  • Solo Saxophone

A single, intimate voice for smaller services and graveside moments.

  • The Trio

    Our most requested ensemble.

  • Full Ensemble

Four or more musicians for larger services and processions.

Every service is quoted individually after a consultation with the family.

How it works

Every detail settled before the day.

  1. Consultation

We speak with the family and the officiant to understand the service, the faith tradition, and the family's wishes.

  2. Planning

We agree on the songs, the cues for our entrance and send-off, attire, and arrival time.

  3. The Service

We arrive early, in matching dark suits, and follow the plan exactly. We play only when it is our moment.

  4. The Send-Off

As the departed is carried out, the music lifts — walking them home.

We work with Catholic, Baptist, Protestant, and non-religious services, and we always follow the guidance of the officiant.

The Music

Hymns and spirituals of the tradition.

  • A Closer Walk with Thee
  • Amazing Grace
  • I'll Fly Away
  • Just a Little While to Stay Here
  • Down by the Riverside
  • When the Saints Go Marching In

Every program is tailored to the family. Favorite hymns and special requests are welcome.

About

Led by El Juez — a Marine and a musician.

Jacob “El Juez” served in the United States Marine Corps and performed with the Marine Corps Band at Cherry Point, North Carolina. For more than a decade since, he has played soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophone on Dallas stages.

Closer Walk brings together both halves of that life: the precision and gravity of military service, and the soul of New Orleans music. Every musician on our roster is a seasoned professional chosen for reliability and for understanding what a funeral asks of them.

For veterans and military families, we are honored to bring the respect of a fellow service member to the day.
